Understory’s NatMap makes it easy to track and verify changes to your ecosystem
Data source
Our products function on a wide variety of data sources, including standard RGB, multispectral, and hyperspectral imagery from drones and satellites. This allows users to dictate the level of vegetation identification detail they desire. While high resolution imagery (1mm to 2cm) can provide species level information, lower resolution imagery (30cm-2m) can provide population level information.
Analysis
Once selected, imagery is compiled, pre-processed, and run through our machine learning pipeline to segment and identify vegetation types. The minimum mapping unit (or the smallest vegetation that will be identified) is determined by the users Ground Sample Distance (GSD). The GSD, or scaled size of a pixel is multiplied by 16 to calculate minimum mapping unit (MMU).
Output
After processing is complete, vegetation composition maps are sent back to the user. Vegetation that has yet to be identified will be segmented into separate classes for users to annotate. This information will plug back into our models and used to identify vegetation in the future. Users can then select what components they need for their projects and download a customized report.
Understory’s software can identify individual plants down to the species level. Such refined detail provide insights on ecosystem composition and health indicators for ecosystem management.
